hey, i'm adriana
Welcome to my honors learning portfolio! This is a blog where I will be sharing my UC experiences and memories for the next few years.
Let's get to know each other
I'm from Toledo, aka The Glass City. Born in raised in a suburb called Sylvania. Toledo is the color blue-green (the buildings) and yellow-orange (the rural fields). It's diverse for a small city and filled with love for art and entrepreneurship. My parents were both born in Ecuador, immigrating to America when they were 17 - they lived in Toronto, CA for 10+ years before getting married, having two kids, moving back to South America, then to Toledo, having me, then back to South America, then back to Toledo *catches breath*. We're a well traveled family. I'm lucky for that. They showed me from a young age that it's ok to move around, to see new things, to search for interesting moments in different cultures, and that it IS worth my money - always.
Jump to present day, I'm living in Cincinnati with all of my closest friends and my son (Apollo, my cat), doing exactly what I want to do (I think?) learning about and studying Industrial Design at *ahem* one of the best design schools in the nation.
Anyways
I want to do things that matter to me. I'm still trying to figure out how I can do that, but I'm keeping a running list of the few things that push me to be a better person and designer, and to be curious about the world.
Community engagement: working with young people, students, children, to get them excited about the world. Art has a beautiful effect on young minds and I think it has the ability to meld perspectives and open minds, so I hop on the opportunity to get involved with those projects as often as possible. Design In Mind is a fantastic on-campus organization that is helping me continue this passion.
Creative work: one of the more fulfilling personal experiences I enjoy. Whether it's sketching/doodling for fun, or working on real projects, creative work challenges me in organization, craft, care, and awareness of self.
Creating experiences: In this age of technology and inherent distraction, I love the idea of creating spaces and environments that almost force people to reconnect with their surroundings - to sign off their devices and appreciate what is happening around them, to feel curious and compelled to "play".
Documenting experiences: I've always been drawn to capturing moments in photographs. I recently bought a simple point and shoot film camera to carry around with me everywhere and started documenting anything I find interesting. Since then, I've shot more than 200 photos of my friends and our adventures (which I will share on here). I'm looking forward to flipping through these photos 10 years from now, when I'm far removed from the moment and the people; the memory will be there in a single frame.
