Self-designed experience: Handmade in china
This course examined the past and present mood of ceramics and porcelain in China. Focus was placed on creating a body of work within a historical industrial city in China that has been producing porcelain for almost 2,000 years. We learned how to outsource and work collaboratively within factory settings. This class also focused on different methods of glaze and surface treatment, along with a variety of building methods both in our respective studios and in Jingdezhen, China. We spent three and a half weeks in Jingdezhen moving through various factories studios and workshops, meeting with local artists and designers, visiting museums and galleries, and attending weekly lectures by visiting artists. Concepts were developed in keeping with the production process and routine, using a variety of techniques to create a series of dynamic sculptural or functional pieces. These pieces were evaluated in both individual and group critiques throughout the semester. We were exposed to past and present ceramic history through in class presentations and historical research presentations and readings.
Self-Designed Experience: Creative Collaboration
I became interested in building/designing sets and styling photoshoots in December of 2017. It was an offshoot of the creative work I was already involved in, styling product photography for my school projects and playing with compositional studies with paper and pen/collaging. When I started sharing my work online I was contacted by several creatives (designers, entrepreneurs, students) around the Cincinnati/Kentucky area who were interested in collaborating on projects with me. It opened up a lot of doors for me in terms of my connections to the community and opportunities to expand my work experience. Since starting this project I’ve learned so much about communicating with others and designing solutions that take into consideration multiple perspectives. All the while, I get to make work that I’m excited about with people that inspire me to push my creative boundaries.

Retroactive Experience: Design Seminar, Spring 2016 / Italy and Switzerland
In the Spring of 2016 I had the opportunity to study abroad for a three week DAAP Design Seminar in Italy and Switzerland. The trip was led and planned by DAAP faculty members and would serve as a fully immersive learning experience for me and ten other DAAP students. We started in Northern Italy by visiting the cities of Milan and Turin, and ended in Basel, Switzerland, which is just north of the Italian border. Throughout the trip we had guided tours of each city; visiting museums, landmarks, schools, design firms, parks, cafes, and small shops. We met interesting people, had incredible conversations, bonded over small moments, sketched, learned, and felt in awe of the world.
